Refrigerant Cap & Charging Port

Threaded caps that seal refrigerant access ports between service intervals — secondary seal for safety and refrigerant retention.

Refrigerant caps are the small threaded covers installed over Schraeder service ports, charging ports, and other refrigerant access points in HVACR systems. Although the Schraeder core inside the port provides the primary seal against refrigerant escape, the cap serves as a critical secondary barrier — important because the core itself can develop leaks over time as the elastomeric seal hardens or as debris accumulates on the sealing surfaces.

The cap typically includes its own internal O-ring or gasket, providing a true second seal independent of the core mechanism. This is required by most refrigerant handling regulations (including EPA Section 608 in the United States) — leaving an access port uncapped, even if the core inside is intact, is generally considered a regulatory violation in commercial and industrial refrigeration installations.

Caps are sized to match the standard service port thread sizes used in the HVACR industry. The 1/4" SAE flare cap is the most common across North American residential and light commercial work. 5/16" SAE flare caps are used on larger commercial systems and on suction-line service ports of high-capacity equipment. Metric M14 and M16 caps are used on European systems and some Asian-built equipment.

Materials are typically C36000 brass for the cap body and EPDM or HNBR for the internal seal, selected for compatibility with the refrigerant in service. The exterior is often chrome-plated for added corrosion resistance and to provide a clean, identifiable appearance.

Many caps include a captive design — a small chain or tether that connects the cap to the access port boss, preventing the cap from being misplaced when removed for service. This is a common feature on commercial and industrial equipment where service caps are removed and replaced frequently.

Replacement caps are inexpensive and considered consumables in routine HVACR service work. Standard practice is to replace any cap with damaged threads, missing seals, or visible corrosion at each service visit.
